On Sunday December 13th at 2pm the State Library will formally recognise the winners of the Make it with Newspaper Contest 2009. The winning artists are all primary and secondary students throughout WA. Come in and meet with them to learn their tips and 'do's and don'ts' on how to create your own sculptures with newspaper.
For ideas to beat summer boredom come to the State Library to get inspiration for your holiday activities.

Real to Reel | Foodchain gift to local bands

Not sure how long it's been out there but cam across the Foodchain site today, an initiative of the Perth Youth Advisory Council who promote and support young creative talent. Phew! Check it out if you're interested in getting involved and learn stuff about arts management, marketing and promotion, admin and events management.
A project they've got on the go at the moment is the 'Real to Reel Recording Studio' which looks to be a pop-up gig to showcase and capture the efforts of 12 local bands. Drop by the studio around midday to see the recording happening. You can even download the tracks they record for free! The programme runs between December 18 and 23.

The mayk girls have been busy! Tegan Taudigani has been taking photos for the Anonymous, a hiphop quartet from Perth, in the lead up to the launch of their debut album 'Alpha Team' later this month. Make Friend II : An exhibition of new art, held in the Norfolk Basement, 8- 12pm.
The second installment of our Make Friend exhibition series features new work by Sydney artist Beastman, who has exhibited all over Australia as well as London, New Zealand and Germany. Beastman is also the founder, editor and designer of the popular Australian online art publication - WE ARE THE IMAGE MAKER.
The exhibition will also feature Perth based artists Straker, Ben Barretto, and Grump. Barretto will be creating a special installation piece specifically for the event which will ‘create’ as the evening progresses. Straker and Grump bring their striking street styles to the event.

The program is aimed to provide professional development for young and emerging artists and arts workers, exploring current arts issues, a space for networking and personal profiling opportunities.

The Clothespeg Project | Submissions close 24th July

The Clothespeg Project was launched in Perth in 2007. The concept is based around these simple instructions... submit any style of work, about any theme you like, with whatever content you want - there is no limitation other than size. Previous volumes have included work from graphic designers, illustrators, photographers, tattoo artists, textile artists, painters, street artists and sculptors. The open submission format welcomes submissions from anyone. Currently in its third volume the project will be touring to Sydney and Perth with a call for works currently open.

As part of The Clothespeg Project an award is offered (sponsored by the host galleries) for one artist who is declared the 'best in show' to receive a free solo exhibition in the space. Past winners have included local designers Sean Morris and Kate Anna Williams.

Made on the Left is planning a full weekend of design goodness at the Hyde Park Hotel from July 25 to 26 and is calling for stallholder applications.

Made on the Left, formed in 2008, creates events and activities to promote independent art, design and fashion from around Western Australia. The association has already held three successful markets, two in Perth and one in Bunbury, in the past 12 months. The market is expanding to two days in July to meet demand.

Successful stallholders must feature their own designs at the markets, with all products either handmade by the designer or fully produced in WA. Applications can be downloaded from www.madeontheleft.com and submitted by June 20.

About Made on the Left: it's a not-for-profit association founded by independent designers in 2008 to support Western Australian creative talent. The Duel | 26th June - 11th July

Matthew Lutton directs The Duel at PICA from 26 June to 11 July. The Duel is a unique theatrical response to a single chapter from Fyodor Dostoevsky's 1880 novel, The Brothers Karamazov. Starring Luke Mullins (from War of the Roses) who wakes with an overwhelming sense of guilt and insight. Recalling the words of his dying brother, a sudden leap of understanding transforms his life forever and draws to him a mysterious stranger harbouring a dark secret. Cottonmouth presents... Works inspired by Nick Cave | Friday 10th July

Cottonmouth brings you a rather special event in the foyer of the Western Australian Museum, as part of the special events associated with 'Nick Cave – the exhibition'. The line-up includes Gabrielle Everall; Simon Cox; Byron Bard; Allan Boyd and Kevin Gillam, Amber Fresh; Jeffrey Jay Fowler; Scott-Patrick Mitchell; and Rachael Dease performing works inspired by Nick Cave. According to Morgan Campbell "last year Lance Dawes was in Perth to show some international pros around the West Coast hotspots. Lance is the founder of Slap Magazine, photographic extraordinaire and all time East Coast shredder and representer. In the wee bit of downtime out in Roleystone, he asked me if we had a local mag? I said “No” without really knowing a reason why. He replied: “With this crazy isolation, so many talented skaters and amazing spots, it seems like it should.” The conversation haunted me, and I guess that was the moment of conception for ‘Staple’."
Anyone seen it around? Sounds fine.

Kris Sowersby talk | Tuesday 16th June

Kris Sowersby is touring Australia for AGDA (Australia Graphic Design Assoc.). He'd be well worth checking out - fantastic typeface designer. He's from NZ but we can't hold that against him - some great things come out of NZ (like snow and... snow!). Sowersby's typefaces combine historical knowledge with contemporary craftmanship & finish.

In a 2007 interview with I Love Typography, Sowersby was asked how he got started designing type: "There was a point at design school when I realised that I loved drawing letterforms, so much so that I would prefer to make typefaces than become a graphic designer. I think it was when I was drawing/copying Bembo letter by letter, trying to understand how it was put together. I noticed that the arch of the ‘n' subtly curves into into the right-hand stem-all the way down into the serif. For some reason that struck me as being quite amazing. It is a detail that would seem rather innocuous, yet lends so much warmth and character to the overall printed impression. I still have that sketch, I wrote "cheeky Bembo!" next to it.

It's a new magazine-flyer-novel thingy, published four-monthly in Tassie. Magnificent "questions our relationship to people, identity and place by connecting extraordinary actions and everyday lives."

Should be interesting to see how it goes. It looks great and it celebrates everything local (from a Tasmanian perspective?). Each edition will turn around a single incident or significant issue.

ARTBAR is a new after dark season of events at the Art Gallery of Western Australia where exhibitions, comedy, music and more come together.

Season One presents four after dark events in June, July, August and September. The first up is Melbourne band - The Basics followed by well-known comedian Wil Anderson.

Melbourne Indie pop trio The Basics showcase their new album , Keep Your Friends Close including their new single "With this Ship” featuring Gotye's front man, Wally De Backer.

Supported by local singer/songwriter Simon Kelly.

The dramatic rise of a distinguished and fertile music scene in Western Australia is undeniable. This film searches for answers within a labyrinth of theories, facts and opinions for just what is responsible for the sudden explosion of success in WA music. Is it the distance, the environment, the community or something else responsible for the sparkling talent pool? This rockumentary explores the history and the environment behind the golden age of home-grown and nationally acclaimed talent in Western Australia. Using live and archival footage, director Aidan O'Bryan presents the Perth bands of the past, the present and the future who have made and will keep WA a key source of world class music as well as minerals. His interviews with influential personalities and musicians give an insight into what it was that finally ignited an original music scene that had taken only tentative steps since its birth from punk in the late 70s. What made it possible for bands today to overcome the 'tyranny of distance'? Who laid the foundations for the explosion, and why didn't they succeed when others did?

The key objective for the AGDA Poster Annual is to promote graphic design to the Australian public.

The brief is "Sampling The Future." Society is in a continual state of flux. We are now dominated, by five major global conditions:
• Climate change,
• Diminishing fossil fuels,
• Globalised economic crisis,
• Generational change, and,
• New technologies,

Using the poster format demonstrate how design holds the potential to lead the parallel trajectories of business, science and society towards a common future. Judges will look for entries that best demonstrate creative thinking, innovative practice, and insightful analysis.

Went and checked out the latest from the Arterial Collective - dRaw, at that cool deco building with the shiny silver doors, 214 Williams St Northbridge.

Great range of of stuff, especially liked the architectural thread 'sketches' by Sarah Archer, the pencil retro-realisim of Lauren Fenlon and the white-on-black images of giraffes and deer advancing from their backgrounds by Kate-Anna Williams. The black (felt tip?) pointalism of Tane Andrews' pair of beetles was nice too.

The exhibition is on for another few days so if you haven't seen it yet get in soon!

We've been in a summer version of hibernation – too many things to do and see, not enough time. We've finally got our shit together and sent our latest issue to press.

This issue will feature Mat De Konig (recently won Best Video Production at the 2008 West Australian Screen Awards and the Special Jury Award at the annual Hungarian Super 8 Film Festival), low down on living with a tribe, skating, and meal tickets.

Tanya Reynolds reviews the latest great coffee at The Imp, Vic Park (www.theimp.com.au/); highlights from the PIAF; creative writing from local writers and some cool pics and pieces.

Sonic Vision | 9th - 15th May, Scitech

From May 9^th- to 15^th Scitech will be running evening sessions of Sonic Vision – an awesome animated music show featuring music from Moby, Boards of Canada, Goldfrapp, Cold Play , U2, Queens of the Stone Age and Audioslave. It is a full dome planetarium show, meaning the sounds and imagery jump out at you from all angles. You can get an idea of what to expect from the American Museum of Natural History website (http://www.amnh.org/rose/dome/), but don’t take too much from this as the website isn’t able to portray the experience of watching in the dome with surround sound and visuals. It is definitely worth seeing as it is at Scitech for one week only and is aimed specifically at an audience aged 16+. Plus its cheaper than a movie and heaps more unique! 8pm start.

In September 2006 a Polaroid Exhibition simply titled BLUE was unveiled. This year Institute Of are exhibiting GREEN.
True to the original brief GREEN will display 20 panels, housing 10 photographs, each designed to reveal a multiplicity of responses to GREEN using Polaroid photography. Works were collected from a diverse range of artists, stretching the levels of thinking across demographics and experience.
This time photographic responses stretched geographically from Perth to Fremantle and as far away as Melbourne, London, Amsterdam and NYC.The BREADBOX Gallery is open Wed-Fri 12-5pm, Sat and Sun 2-6pm.

Western Australian Theatre Development Initiative (WATDI)

ARTRAGE, The Blue Room and PICA have launched the Western Australian Theatre Development Initiative (WATDI) – a new funding program backed by the Australia Council Theatre Board that will result in up to $90,000 investments being provided to successful proposals in 2009 and 2010.

The program is a bit different to normal funding opportunities, and its looking to support new theatre practice by WA independent artists, companies, collectives and collaborations looking to take creative risks and explore new territory.

It's for the entire WA independent theatre sector, across the spectrum of practice, interests and experience.
