The Clothespeg Project | Submissions close 24th July

The Clothespeg Project was launched in Perth in 2007. The concept is based around these simple instructions... submit any style of work, about any theme you like, with whatever content you want - there is no limitation other than size. Previous volumes have included work from graphic designers, illustrators, photographers, tattoo artists, textile artists, painters, street artists and sculptors. The open submission format welcomes submissions from anyone. Currently in its third volume the project will be touring to Sydney and Perth with a call for works currently open.

As part of The Clothespeg Project an award is offered (sponsored by the host galleries) for one artist who is declared the 'best in show' to receive a free solo exhibition in the space. Past winners have included local designers Sean Morris and Kate Anna Williams.

Staple Mag | Issue Two out now

Check this out - Perth's own skate mag.
According to Morgan Campbell "last year Lance Dawes was in Perth to show some international pros around the West Coast hotspots. Lance is the founder of Slap Magazine, photographic extraordinaire and all time East Coast shredder and representer. In the wee bit of downtime out in Roleystone, he asked me if we had a local mag? I said “No” without really knowing a reason why. He replied: “With this crazy isolation, so many talented skaters and amazing spots, it seems like it should.” The conversation haunted me, and I guess that was the moment of conception for ‘Staple’."
Anyone seen it around? Sounds fine.

Cottonmouth, the last for 2009! | Thursday 11th June

Cottonmouth XVII brings together a lineup that makes it the biggest Cottonmouth ever. It will also be the last monthly Cottonmouth for 2009. Nooooo! Straight from the mouth of Cotton herself... "After a year and a half wrestling with this crazy beautiful word-beast we've built, proudly watching her grow up to become one of this town's and this country's most eligible word-beasts, we're in need of a little time to recharge."

Fair enough we say, especially since we've just done the same thing ourselves! The last line up looks grand, with our favourite regulars...
Patrick Pittman
Scott-Patrick Mitchell
Simon Cox
Tristan Fidler
Gabrielle Everall
Lily Chan
Jay Pruyn
Anna Dunnill
Byron Bard
MC Able

... and three great musical interludes:
"RABBIT ISLAND will once more take the stage with LI'L LEONIE LIONHEART (hopefully armed with their sketchbooks)! And CARBUNCLE will blow your minds just as they did last year when they were on a slightly different SalamandaStrong sort of trip! Some of us are still recovering."

See the Cottonmouth website for more info and a heads up on future stuff. Looks like they'll be back with the whole monthly gig thing at the start of next year, and hopefully projects in the meantime.

459 Bar, Rosemount Hotel, 459 Fitzgerald St, North Perth.
$5 entry, doors open 7.30, musical mayhem at 8, spoken words soon after.

Kris Sowersby talk | Tuesday 16th June

Kris Sowersby is touring Australia for AGDA (Australia Graphic Design Assoc.). He'd be well worth checking out - fantastic typeface designer. He's from NZ but we can't hold that against him - some great things come out of NZ (like snow and... snow!). Sowersby's typefaces combine historical knowledge with contemporary craftmanship & finish.

In a 2007 interview with I Love Typography, Sowersby was asked how he got started designing type: "There was a point at design school when I realised that I loved drawing letterforms, so much so that I would prefer to make typefaces than become a graphic designer. I think it was when I was drawing/copying Bembo letter by letter, trying to understand how it was put together. I noticed that the arch of the ‘n' subtly curves into into the right-hand stem-all the way down into the serif. For some reason that struck me as being quite amazing. It is a detail that would seem rather innocuous, yet lends so much warmth and character to the overall printed impression. I still have that sketch, I wrote "cheeky Bembo!" next to it.

Perth Winter Arts Festival | 1st June to 31st August

Music, visual arts, theatre, film, dance and great nights out; Grace Knight, Benn Lee, free lunchtime concerts, jazz, galleries, photography, exhibitions.

Ok, maybe very general there - but some of my most favourite keywords! When I get more time I'll be looking through the programme (check it out here, www.perthwinterarts.com.au) for more info and specific events. Right now though, I'm just glad there's stuff to be done when it's *finally* starting to feel like winter!

Feel free to post reccomendations and suggestions for what we should see/hear/taste/feel!

The Maids | Last show this Saturday, 6th June

French artist Jean Genet’s 20th century work will be reinvigorated with this vibrant and original showcase of West Australian women artists, including an original sound design by Felicity Groom - winner, 2008 WA Top Song Competition for Triple J Unearthed.

Every night reality blurs with fantasy as Claire and Solange take turns pretending to be their mistress in a crazed ritual, fantasizing the murder of Madame.

With its evocative language, The Maids is a harrowing tale about the rituals of extravagance and the horrors of poverty, the agony of exclusion and the ecstasy of imagination.

A City of Perth Winter Arts Season event. Visit www.perthwinterarts.com.au for more.

Tickets $22, concession $15
